Fitting a bathtub on your own can be a cumbersome job, but knowing the right steps on How to fit a bath tub do so will make it possible for you. Fitting a bathtub can be challenging, but measuring the dimensions of the tub and bathroom correctly beforehand will give you the idea on how to maneuver and install it within the limited space. You need to safely disconnect the water supply and may even need the the sink, cabinet or the toilet removed so that you can access the plumbing. If needed, it is always better to hire a professional plumber who has the skills and expertise to install it.

Before everything else, use channel lock pliers and turn off the main water supply if you do not have a separate cutoff valve to shut off the bathroom water supply. Release the pressure and remaining water through the lower valve to make sure that there is no water in the pipelines. Measure the complete area including the width and the depth of the tub which might be approximately 30-32 inches wide and 5-6 feet long. One of the important things to note is that, if the alcove has a right drain opening, you will need a right drain tub, and if it has a left drain opening, then you will need a left drain tub. The distance area from the top of the tub flange might be within 1-2 inches within which you need you place the ledger board before the tub can be installed. In this case, install the ledger board using screws to fasten it by leveling horizontally and adding shorter boards that will support the bathtub edges across the back wall.

Before bringing the bathtub, check if there are any fractures or damages in the tub since porcelain material can be easily smudged if not safely stored. Before you bring the bathtub to fit into the bathroom, level and clean the floor area carefully where you want to place the tub. Now, lift the bathtub on the front edges by sliding the rest of it through rags to bring it to the bathroom’s alcove location. Then cautiously place, level and position the tub tightly against the wall adjusting with wood shims if needed. Then follow these instructions for any different type of tub you are going to place. If you have cast-iron tub without holes, it would not fit with the studs, in this case, you have to nail the flange above the top and hammer slowly without making any damages. For fiberglass tubs, just drill holes at the stud and drive the roofing nails through to secure them with the tub flange. Then turn over the tub and follow the manual instructions to assemble the shoe fitting, drain, overflow, and waste pipes.

Aligning with the openings of the tub, the overflow and the waste pipe needs to be inserted into the shoe fitting. Now seal them up with the plumber’s putty tightening with the pipe tape and screw the tub flange underside into the shoe fitting and the overflow drain placing a rubber gasket or washer to constrict the assembly and connect the pipes together. After this is done, just install the overflow cover and mix necessary mortar to apply to the subfloor of the tub. More than 2 inch layer of mortar is not needed to cover the subfloor around the tub location. Also, finish the rest of the molding around the bathtub with drywall and paint. This is how you can fit a bathtub into your bathroom but if you do not have the previous experiences, you should work this out with someone else’s assistance.
